Newars in Katmandu marked "Black Day"

It's been a decade a couple of immigrant judges issued verdict, on a petition of a handful of immigrants, against the decision of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, that the city, nurtured by the Newars for over 2,000 years cannot used their local language auxulary to the government's "Nepali" language for its official language. It was an insult to the 85 ethnic grups and over a hundred local laguages and their dialects.

The Newars observed this day, raising black flags at the historic Hanumandhoka Dubar, and warned the Constituent Assembly that the new constitution, beiing drafted, must assert equal rights of all languages spoken in the country, to save the country from further conflicts.

Sujib Bajracharya at Kavi Cafe

Last Saturday, on 27th March, Sujib Bajracharya, the coordinator of Newa Jagaran Manch came to Kabi Cafe for interaction.

Basically, he explained how the organization was working for the Newar community. He said that Newars are not politically aware and they do not react even when they are oppressed by the immigrants. So, all Newars shouuld now learn to say no when they see things are happening against their will, he urged.

He also said that all the Newars should fight to their last drop of blood for Newa Autonomous Region, which will come only after a long fight. it is because most of the Bahun leaders as welll as other Janajatis are also not in positive current to let Newars own the Nepal Mandal, which they had been nurturing for past centuries.

Nepa Rashtriya Party Yala Kacha organized an interaction on the party stand on federal system. Dr Keshav Man Shakya, Buddha Sayami, Suresh Pradhan, Kiran Shakya and others were speakers. The programme was organized at the meeting hall of Nepalbhasha Manka Khala Yala.

Lalipur Nagari Abhiyan and Kabi Cafe organized an interaction programme on Newa State and Constituent Assembly on Saturay, 21st of March 2010.

Speakers were Hitman Shakya, Hisila Yami and Dilip Maharjan. They stressed on ethnicity in making of federal democraecy of Nepal.

Demand of a Newarland

Lately though, the Newar leaders of the kathmandu Valley went to the streed and raged their demand for a separate Newar State. I would like to contratuolate all the participants and orgnisers.

it will not be fair not to raise issue of newarland when all the people from Seti to Ilam have been raging war in teh name of ethnic autonomy.

Now, after taking the mass to a street, the orgnisers should not forget teh sisue. they should continue the whole process and raise voice agsisnst those
Ward secretaries who have no knowledge about the Buddhist temples.

Congratulations to Supriya!

It is pleasant to know that Supriya Tuladhar was crowned Miss Newa 2007. All my best wishes - "Bhintuna". Don't you think it is the time to dig our significance of this event. Have you any idea where is the former Miss Newa. I mean what is she doing?

Supriya Tuladhar was crowned Miss Newa 2007 title at the Mero Mobile Miss Newa contest which took place this Saturday at the BICC Hall at New Baneshwor. Shweta Shrestha was honored with the 1st runner-up title while Bandana Tandukar walked away the 2nd runner-up title.

“For me both equal rights and opportunities are important because they are two sides of a single coin. There are equal rights when there are equal opportunities and vice-versa. That's why equal rights and equal opportunities should be utilized in a fruitful manner.” Answered Supriya to the common question of the jury: What is important equal right or equal opportunity and why?

“When I didn't win a single sub-title, I'd given up my hope but when my name got announced, it was a dream come true,” shared Supriya with smile.

Along with the titles Supriya, Shweta and Bandana won Rs 82,000 (in total), Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 each respectively.

Besides the main title holders, there were 12 other sub-titles that were presented to the contestants at the same event.

Lumanti Tamrakar clinched the Miss Nepal Bhasa title along with a purse of Rs 10,000 while Toesha Rajkarnikar bagged Miss Talent title with a cash prize of Rs 5,000.

The brightly lit stage was adorned with 40 beautiful contestants who were seen wearing Newari dress inspired long flowing gowns during the introduction round. Out of 40 competitors, 18 were chosen in the second round. The top eight finalists had to go through question and answer round in written form. They were given two-minute time wherein they had to jot down their own individual answers.

The program got little extended due to tie between contestants.

Reformation of Nepalbhasha Mankaa Khalaa?

There is a good news for those who are looking for reformation of Nepal Bhasha Mankaa Khalaa.

The 27 years old orgnaisation, which often boasts of being the most representative one of the Newars has never been reformed, as there is nobody ready to hold election and welcome a new leader.

The new chairperson of Nhuda Samaroha Samitee, Sumitra Manandhar Gurung is said to have raised a sunami in the orthodox orgnisation by her outspoken views. She has demanded the lifelong general secretary Naresh Bir Shakya to make the orgniasation's income and expences tranparent and seek participation from other communities. I'm hopeful that the new committee is doing something great.

This is of course going to give a heart attack to Shakya as well the rubber-stamp chairman Padma Ratna Tuladhar.

This is the time to "hit the iron when it is hot". The demand of election in the Manka Khala is very old and till the date all those who have been raising voice for democratisation of the institution has been sidelined or boycotted by the Mankha-khalaa related persons. So much so, Newari daily Sandhya Times Daily once pulished a mock news saying that the Khalaa is reformed and gave news including teh names of those who want to see democracy of the institution.

Friends, let's keep our fingers crossed and see how Shakya will be disclosing how much of donation it has so far collected and where he has spent.

I wish all the best for Nepal Bhasha Mankaa Khalaa and its democratic future.

Happy New Year 1128, but...

The best thing that makes me happy is wishing good for somebody, especially when I’m wishing for somebody I don’t know. The festival of Swanti, Tihar or Dipawali also brings me a chance to do so. It is extraordinarily amazing to see the Kathmandu Valley is illuminated with beautiful lights and smiling faces. I love to wish good for others and this festival brings me one more chance to wish – for the Happy New Year. I wish you all a prosperous, peaceful, healthy and happy new year 1128, according to Nepal Calendar.
There is no doubt; the calendar is Nepali as it was proposed by a Nepali citizen, in the name of the country he lived in for the people he loved.
Still, when we go for good wishing rally I also hear a kind of political slogan – It must be declared Nepal’s national calendar. Sounds nice…I also agree that is must be the one.
And I go to find out what this movement for the Nationalization of the Nepal Calendar. It was promulgaged by Nepal Bhasha Mankaa Khalaa in, may be in 1980. Lots of things have changed in this long period – the king has lost his 238 year old regime and the lower-most “caste” of people have gained the reputation of being “Dalit”. I don’t want to make the queue of the developments Nepal has witnessed in this long period of time.
In this regard, several questions have hit my mind. With your permission, I put them on board so that you may discuss and provide me with better ideas for I feel I’m ignorant about it. I welcome the hottest criticism with some sense.
Why does it happen that only Nepal Bhasha Mankaa Khalaa in the leading role? It is as if no other organization is interested to support it.
Why do only Newars are seen on the front row of the movement? Is is that the non-Newars are not interested in it or the Newars do not want to let others join their hands for the Nepal Calendar movement? I believe that it the Mankaa Khalaa really believest that it is indeed a Nepal Calendar, the orgnaisation committee should include representatives form Bahuns, Chhetris, Magars, Rais, Tamangs and Majhis etc. How many years we have to see some other faces in the front than Padma Ratna Tuladhar and Naresh Bir Shakya? I’m not talking about the puppet Nhu da samaroha samiti, which can do nothing without permission from the most undemocratic leaders duo.
It is fun to see the cultural rally, but I wonder why the rally is mostly dominated by the traditional drums and traditional dresses? Does it mean to show that we do not accept the modern culture?
Motorcycle rally is an integral part of the New Year rally. It is costly, inconvenient, polluting and also noisy, but why on earth all Newars accept it. Isn’t there any environment-conscious person in Newar community? Why do not they discuss about impact of this kind of rally? And it is the most rowdy, uncivilized and punkish rally to observe in Nepal. Isn’t there any law to control it?
Why does the movement takes place only in core of the city – like Basantapur, Asson and Thahity? Does this means that the Newars are celebrating it for their fun and it should not be of concern for non Newars and also for those Newars who live outside the Ring Road? ( I know about the long-route motorcycle rally). Or it also means that Newars live only in inner part of the city?
The movement is directly associated with the contribution of a man called Sankhadhar Sakwha. The historic figure has provoked people to write over 10,000 articles, mainly in Nepalbhasha. The discussion of Dinesh Raj Panta, Dirgha Praad Prasai and other extremist Bahuns could be quoted here. How many articles doe it need to establish an established figure? We still read the same old stuff. Can’t it be just stopped? Millions of rupees have been spent in the name of doing research on the single persons? What have they produced ultimately?
Money matters. We know, over tens of millions of rupees are spent for this celebration. Is it really necessary when most of Newars are fighting for better life styles? And where does this money come from? Be it, is is really wise expenditure?
A bit politics. The same demand has been going on for last 27 years. Hundreds of demands have been fulfilled (even those, which seems impossible a decade ago) but it remains as it is. Does not it means that the organisers do not want the demand to be fulfilled? If it is so, the orgnisers have to understand that their way of fighting for recognition is a failure and either they have to give up their leadership or give up the agenda.
And I would love to know what does it really means by “national recognition of Nepal Calendar”. Every year, we read in the newspaper that the minister or the prime minister has agreed to accept it. It si accepted in Gorkhapatra, the promoter has been recognized as national luminary, the ministers attend the programmes, postage stamp has been published, and lastly the prime minister has decided to use it in his letter head. Isn’t it enough?
